D. Mark Gabel
I am a graphic designer, photographer, writer, editor and computer consultant who lives in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
I studied pastels, watercolors and photography in my teen years, winning two first prizes in juried art shows (one local and one state) in my late teens. After high school I began learning the basics of design, photography and production for publications as an artist for Florida Health and Human Services.
In Japan as a student in Friends World College I continued photographic training and began studying sumi-e with a Kyoto artist, winning the equivalent of an Honorable Mention in the 1975 annual Nanga-In Japanese national juried art show. On the strength of this prize I was invited to join the professional painters’ association. During this time I also began to practice kyudo (traditional Japanese archery), which I continue (please visit www.kyudo.com for more information).
Over a period of fifteen years (after receiving my B.A.), I worked as the sole graphic designer at Centre College, Grinnell College, and Oberlin College/Conservatory, respectively,
I won many awards, including several from CASE and the University and College Designers’ Association. At all three of these institutions I replaced nationally recognized firms specializing in university and college marketing design.
My years of technical, professional, artistic and spiritual training combine to create works of art, communication and design that reflect a high sense of composition, color, depth and style.
